Why Dubai’s Summer Heat Is Secretly Destroying Your Spine

Every year between May and September, Dubai transforms. The temperature climbs above 45°C, the humidity becomes suffocating, and life moves indoors. The malls fill up. The gyms empty out. Long walks along JBR give way to long hours on the sofa. You tell yourself it’s just the summer – that you’ll get back to normal in October.
But while you’re waiting for the cooler months, something is quietly happening to your spine. And most people don’t notice until the damage is already done.
As a chiropractor in Dubai with over 36 years of clinical experience, I see a very predictable pattern every year: the patients who come through the door in September and October are almost always dealing with problems that started – and silently worsened – during the summer months. The causes are specific, they’re preventable, and almost none of them have anything to do with lifting something heavy or sleeping in a bad position.
Here is what Dubai’s summer is actually doing to your spine, and what you can do about it before October arrives.
1. The AC Effect: Why Every Building in Dubai Is a Muscle Spasm Waiting to Happen
Step outside in July and within seconds you’re in 44°C heat. Step back inside a mall, office, or restaurant and you’re hit with 19°C air conditioning. Then back outside. Then back inside.
This temperature cycling – repeated dozens of times a day throughout the summer – is one of the most underappreciated causes of spinal muscle spasm in the region.
Here’s what happens physiologically: when you move from extreme heat into cold air conditioning, your muscles contract rapidly in response to the sudden temperature drop. This is a normal protective reflex – your body tightening up to preserve core heat. But when this happens repeatedly throughout the day, the muscles surrounding your spine – the paraspinal muscles, the quadratus lumborum, the deep cervical flexors in your neck – never fully relax. They stay in a low-grade state of contraction.
Over days and weeks, this persistent low-grade tension leads to:
- Muscle guarding – where the muscles lock up around a spinal segment to protect it, causing stiffness and restricted movement
- Trigger points – hyperirritable knots in the muscle that refer pain to other areas (a trigger point in the neck, for example, is one of the most common causes of what people mistake for migraine-type headaches)
- Fascial restriction – the connective tissue surrounding your muscles tightens and becomes less supple, reducing spinal mobility gradually and often painlessly until it suddenly isn’t
What makes this particularly insidious in Dubai is that it doesn’t feel dramatic. You don’t wake up one day unable to move. You wake up feeling slightly stiffer than last week, slightly more uncomfortable in your desk chair, slightly more tension across your shoulders by 3pm. You attribute it to stress, or screen time, or a bad night’s sleep. Meanwhile, the cumulative tension builds through June, July, and August – and then something minor (bending to pick up your bag, turning quickly to reverse your car) tips it over the edge.
What to do: Avoid spending prolonged time in very cold air conditioning immediately after being in the heat – give your body 5-10 minutes to adjust. Keep a light layer (a jacket or shawl) with you in heavily air-conditioned environments to prevent sustained muscle contraction during long indoor periods. If you notice morning stiffness increasing through the summer months, don’t ignore it.
2. Dehydration and Your Spinal Discs: The One Thing Most People Don’t Know
Most people know that dehydration is dangerous in Dubai’s summer heat. What almost nobody knows is what dehydration does specifically to your intervertebral discs – the soft, shock-absorbing cushions between each vertebra in your spine.
Your spinal discs are approximately 80% water. They have no direct blood supply. Instead, they absorb fluid through a process called imbibition – essentially drawing water in from the surrounding tissue through movement and pressure changes. When you move, the disc compresses slightly and releases; when the pressure reduces, fluid is drawn back in. This is how your discs stay hydrated, healthy, and capable of absorbing the loads your spine carries throughout the day.
When you are dehydrated, this process breaks down. Less fluid is available for the discs to draw from. The discs begin to lose height and become less pliable – more like dried-out rubber than the healthy gel-like cushions they’re supposed to be.
The consequences are significant:
- Reduced shock absorption – a dehydrated disc transfers more mechanical load to the vertebral endplates and facet joints, accelerating wear
- Increased herniation risk – a disc under mechanical stress is far more likely to bulge or herniate when it is already compromised by dehydration
- Disc height loss – even mild chronic dehydration contributes to the gradual loss of disc height that causes the narrowing of the spaces through which your nerves exit the spine, which is a precursor to nerve compression and radiating pain
Dubai’s summer makes this significantly worse for two reasons. First, the obvious one: you lose fluid rapidly in extreme heat even when you’re not exerting yourself. Second – and this is the one people miss – air conditioning itself is dehydrating. Air conditioning removes moisture from the air. Spending 8-10 hours a day in an air-conditioned office or home without adequate fluid intake creates a steady dehydrating effect that most people simply don’t compensate for.
The current guidance for adults in the UAE during summer months is a minimum of 3 litres of water per day for sedentary individuals – more if you are physically active or spend time outdoors. Coffee and fizzy drinks don’t count; caffeine is mildly diuretic and counterproductive.
What to do: Hydrate consistently throughout the day rather than in large amounts infrequently. A simple habit: keep a 1-litre water bottle on your desk and aim to finish it before lunch and again before you leave work. Add electrolytes (not sugary sports drinks – look for low-sugar electrolyte tablets or coconut water) if you are sweating heavily. Your discs will thank you in 10 years.
3. The Summer Sedentary Trap: What Happens to Your Spine When You Stop Moving for Four Months
In October, Dubai comes alive. The parks fill up, the running groups restart, the weekend activities return. In June, almost all of that stops.
This is completely understandable – nobody is going for a morning run when it’s 38°C at 7am with 90% humidity. But the spinal consequences of four months of significantly reduced physical activity are real and often severe.
Your spine depends on movement. The phrase most chiropractors use is “motion is lotion” – it’s a simplification, but an accurate one. Movement drives the fluid exchange in your discs, lubricates your facet joints, activates the deep stabilising muscles of the spine (the multifidus and transversus abdominis), and maintains the proprioceptive feedback your brain needs to maintain proper posture and coordination.
When you significantly reduce activity for an extended period, several things happen:
The deep stabilisers switch off. Your deep core muscles are not like your biceps or your quadriceps – they don’t maintain themselves through occasional use. They need consistent, low-level activation to stay engaged. When you spend most of the summer sitting, these muscles become inhibited, leaving your spine dependent on the larger, more superficial muscles (which are not designed for this role and fatigue much faster). The result is a spine that is structurally less supported and far more vulnerable to injury from everyday activities.
The hip flexors shorten. Sitting for extended periods causes the iliopsoas – the deep hip flexor that attaches to the lumbar vertebrae – to adaptively shorten. Tight hip flexors pull the pelvis into an anterior tilt, which exaggerates the curve of the lower back (lumbar lordosis) and increases compressive load on the lower lumbar discs and facet joints. This is one of the most common structural contributors to lower back pain and is almost universal in people who spend a Dubai summer largely sedentary.
Posture degrades progressively. Without the corrective influence of regular movement, activity, and postural awareness, most people’s posture gradually worsens through the summer months. The forward head position associated with increased screen time, the rounded shoulders from sofa-based viewing positions, the compressed lumbar spine from hours in a car seat or desk chair – all of these compound across weeks and months into patterns that don’t resolve on their own.
What to do: Move intentionally indoors. You don’t need to run in the heat – a 20-minute daily walk inside a mall, a consistent stretching or yoga routine, swimming, or even a simple standing desk at home makes a genuine difference to spinal health over the summer. The goal is to prevent deconditioning, not to maintain your October fitness levels.
4. Tech Neck Gets Worse in Summer – Here’s Why
Dubai already has one of the highest rates of “tech neck” – the forward head posture and cervical strain caused by prolonged screen use – of any city in the world. Summer makes it worse, for a simple reason: when outdoor activity drops and social plans reduce, screen time increases dramatically.
For every inch your head moves forward of its neutral position over your shoulders, the effective weight your neck muscles must support increases by approximately 10 pounds. At a 60-degree forward tilt – a common phone-viewing angle – your neck is effectively managing a load of 60 pounds, sustained over hours.
Over a summer of increased screen time, this leads to:
- Progressive tightening of the suboccipital muscles at the base of the skull – the most common source of cervicogenic (neck-related) headaches
- Weakening of the deep cervical flexors at the front of the neck, which are the primary stabilisers of the cervical spine
- Gradual flattening of the natural cervical curve (cervical lordosis), which reduces the spine’s ability to absorb mechanical load and increases disc stress
- Upper trapezius and levator scapulae tension – the familiar “knot” behind the neck and across the tops of the shoulders that almost every office worker in Dubai knows
The combination of tech neck, increased sedentary time, AC-induced muscle contraction, and disc dehydration makes the summer months a uniquely damaging period for the cervical spine in particular.
What to do: Raise your screen to eye level wherever possible. Take a deliberate 2-minute break every hour – stand up, roll your shoulders back, gently retract your chin (chin tucks), and do 10 slow neck rotations. These are small habits with a disproportionately large impact over a four-month period.
5. The October Shock: Why September and October Are Our Busiest Months
Every year without exception, the weeks immediately following the end of the Dubai summer are among the busiest for chiropractic practices across the city. And the reason is simple: people who spent four months becoming gradually stiffer, weaker, and more dehydrated suddenly try to return to their pre-summer activity levels as if nothing has changed.
A body that has spent May through September predominantly sedentary, dehydrated, and exposed to constant temperature cycling is not ready to immediately resume a 5km morning run, a CrossFit session, or a full round of golf at The Els Club. The muscles are deconditioned, the discs are compromised, the hip flexors are shortened, the deep stabilisers are inhibited, and the overall load tolerance of the spine is significantly reduced.
This mismatch between what people want to do in October and what their body is currently capable of is the most common mechanism behind acute spinal injuries at this time of year – disc herniations, facet joint strains, sacroiliac joint sprains, and muscle tears that could have been avoided entirely with some preparation and a gradual return to activity.
If you are planning to resume exercise in October, plan a 2-3 week graduated return – shorter distances, lower weights, reduced intensity – to allow your body to re-adapt before you push it.
6. What Dr. Gerry Recommends: A Summer Spine Protocol
Based on 36+ years of clinical experience and over a decade of treating patients in Dubai specifically, here is what I recommend to every patient heading into the summer months:
Hydration: A minimum of 3 litres of water daily, consistently throughout the day. Increase this if you spend any time outdoors or exercise.
Movement: At minimum 20 minutes of intentional movement daily – indoors is fine. Swimming is excellent for spinal decompression. Walking in a mall counts. A simple morning stretching routine targeting the hip flexors, hamstrings, and thoracic spine takes 10 minutes and makes a meaningful difference across four months.
Temperature awareness: Carry a light layer into heavily air-conditioned spaces. Allow your body a few minutes to adjust after moving between extreme heat and cold rather than sitting directly under a vent.
Screen habits: Raise your screen, take breaks, and do chin tucks regularly if you are increasing your screen time through the summer.
Preventative chiropractic care: The summer months are an excellent time for a spinal check-up – not because you are necessarily in pain, but because addressing the early signs of deconditioning, joint restriction, and muscular imbalance before October is far easier and faster than addressing an acute injury after it.
7. When to See Dr. Gerry
