Posture Exercises for Dubai’s Desk Workers
By Dr. Gerry Nastasia | Dubai Chiropractor | Umm Suqeim 2, Dubai
Dubai’s skyline is full of office towers — DIFC, Business Bay, Downtown — and a huge number of the people working in them spend 8 to 10 hours a day sitting at a desk. Add a commute spent looking down at a phone, and most residents are accumulating posture strain every single day without realizing it.
The good news is that posture isn’t fixed — it responds well to targeted strength work. Here are five exercises that directly counteract the slouched, forward-head posture that desk work creates.
1. Plank
The plank strengthens your core, shoulders, and back simultaneously — the muscle group most responsible for holding your spine upright through a long workday. Start in a push-up position, keep your body in a straight line, and hold for 30 seconds to a minute, engaging your abs throughout.
2. Rows
Rows directly target the upper back muscles that counteract slouching — exactly the muscles that weaken from hours of forward-leaning desk posture. Using dumbbells, a resistance band, or a rowing machine, keep your back straight and squeeze your shoulder blades together as you pull.
3. Deadlifts
Deadlifts strengthen the lower back, glutes, and hamstrings — the foundation that supports your spine through long periods of sitting or standing. Keep your back straight and your core engaged, lifting by straightening your hips and knees. Start light to build proper form first.
4. Shoulder Blade Squeeze
This can be done at your desk between meetings. Sit or stand with your arms at your sides, squeeze your shoulder blades together, and hold for a few seconds. Repeat 10-15 times. It’s a small movement, but it directly reverses the rounded-shoulder posture that builds up over a desk-bound day.
5. Chest Stretch
Hours of typing and phone use tighten the chest muscles, which pulls the shoulders forward and worsens posture. Stand in a doorway with your arms at a 90-degree angle on the frame, and step forward gently to stretch the chest. Hold for 20-30 seconds.
Why Exercise Alone Sometimes Isn’t Enough
These exercises build the strength to support good posture — but if your spine and joints are already misaligned from years of desk work, strength alone may not fully resolve the problem. This is where chiropractic care complements strength training: a chiropractic assessment identifies whether structural misalignment is contributing to your posture issues, so the corrective exercises you do actually have proper alignment to work with.
Dr. Gerry Nastasia, DC — Dual Board Certified in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine and Chiropractic Orthopedics with 36+ years of experience — combines postural assessment and correction with targeted exercise guidance, so Dubai’s office workers get a plan that addresses both the structural and muscular sides of posture.
